Their doctrinal cupboard is bare, so they're reduced to producing inane cartoon videos.

OK, I am too old and missing it - but what is this SPARLOCK phenomenon?
by james_woods inat first, i thought it was some legitimate cartoon character (disney or such) that the society was putting down as "demonized".. then, i started getting the idea that perhaps (unbelievably) the society had made him up as a negative "teaching device" to warn jw kids about "worldly demonism".... can this possibly be true?.
surely not even the wtbts could be that stupid!!!.
can somebody explain this to me, please???

Nice work MC, it's becoming increasingly hard for them to operate in the shadows, away from the light of day. Disclosures of this sort must have them squirming!

Yet, what about the recent announcement in a kool-aid WT edition that they've begun to archive and catalogue Society memorabilia from the Russell/Rutherford era, soliciting submissions from local JWs.... how is that not succumbing to nostalgia for the "good old days" when the drivel they published had a modicum of plausiiblit, before the inexorable ticking of the clock invalidated it all, post 1914, post 1975, etc.?

Appropriating material from other relgious sources, usually without attribution, is Standard Operating Procedure for them, and has been for a long time... what do you think those large libraries are for? Ray Franz commented on this in CoC.

Proficient Jehovah Witness Apologist Per Kingdom Hall, How Many?
by Bubblegum Apotheosis inon average, how many highly trained bible students would you estimate existed in your kingdom hall?
to define this further, i am thinking of men or women who studied more than watchtower literature, spent time in libraries to dig deeper than most shallow minded drones.. how can someone be a baptized jw for forty five years and be stupid regarding "the trintiy, hell fire, first century culture, church father's teachings, rapture, heaven, reasons for defending the reliability of bible texts."?
could the watering down, diluted teachings be the problem with "new-gen's" impotent bible understanding or lack of understanding?.

Few of today's JW's are acquainted with -- much less use -- a concordance; or the Kingdom Interlinear Greek Scriptures, a WTBTS publication, of which more than 800,000 per produced, is out of print... efforts by some individuals to learn something of Biblical languages-- once considered commendable -- is now disparaged.

The Predictions Thread
by cedars ini thought it might be interesting and fun to have a "predictions thread", where we set out our predictions for events to unfold concerning the watch tower society (or jehovah's witnesses in general) over the coming years/decades.. it strikes me that so much has happened in the last ten years, most of which has defied expectations.
here's just a few of the developments that i can think of:.
the abolishment of group book studies in favor of a "family worship evening"the creation of a "study edition" watchtowerthe halving of monthly magazine printing commitmentsthe unprecedented closure/merging of branches (16% reduction in branches last year)the menlo park scandal, a body of elders removed for resisting a refurb of their kingdom hallthe lawsuits in victoria, australia - the society taken to court concerning child protection lawscourtroom admissions about the faithful & discreet slave and similarities with the catholic churchincreased hate speech against "mentally diseased" apostatesastonishing lapses of judgment, such as the "selma and steve" study articlethe ditching of gilead as a school for missionariesambitious construction plans for a new world hq (with or without jehovah's blessing!

"ScenicViewer - if anything, I can see the new worldwide HQ becoming the permanent compound of the Governing Body once the organization shrinks to an almost infinitesimal size." like a Hitlerian bunker, circa 1945?

I believe they'll (grudgingly) be compelled come to terms with the evolution, age-of-man issues over the next decade; after all Russell allowed for the possibility of evolution, with the exception of humans. The only alternative is increased marginalization.

"The other sheep should never forget that their salvation depends on their active support of Christ’s anointed “brothers”
still on earth. (Matt. 25:34-40)" If that isn't blasphemy, then I don't understand my dictionary's definition of the term. Also, note how the sentence is framed in the third person: The other sheep "their salvation:" "their active support" ... most of today's WT writers are of the "Other Sheep" class.. none of the Governing Body are described as writers.

The Great Debate: "Has Science Refuted Religion?
by dark angle injust want to share this amazing debate!
caltech cosmologist and physicist sean carroll teams up with skeptic magazine publisher and science historian michael shermer in this epic debate with noted conservative author and king's college president dinesh d'souza and mit physicist ian hutchinson as they go head-to-head over one of the most controversial issues of our age.
as science pushes deeper into territory once the province of religion, with questions such as why there is something rather than nothing?, where did the universe come from?, how did life arise?, what was the origin of morality?, and others, inevitable conflicts arise over the best approach to answer them.

I think that one needs to proceed cautiously with terminology, understanding that a wide chasm separates spirituality from institutionalized relgion
